Dear Honorable Legislators of Somerset County,

I am a resident of Somerset County writing to express my strong support for House Bill 558, which mandates the State Department of Education, in collaboration with the Maryland Department of Health, to develop a comprehensive health education framework. This bill represents a significant step forward in ensuring that our children receive a well-rounded, fact-based health education that is essential for their development and well-being.

Contrary to concerns raised by some groups, especially by Moms for Liberty, HB 558 does not take control away from local Boards of Education (BOEs) but rather provides a standardized framework to guide them. The assertion that the bill does not allow parents to opt out of topics related to gender ideology and sexual orientation is inaccurate. The bill explicitly requires each county board to establish policies and procedures for parents or guardians to opt their student out of certain topics. The claim that HB 558 promotes "gender ideology" is a distortion of its intent. The inclusion of developmentally appropriate topics on sexual orientation and gender identity in the curriculum is fact based, and will reduce stigma and bullying of Maryland's LGBTQIA+ youth.

By fostering informed young citizens, we're investing in a healthier future for all of Maryland. The comprehensive nature of this education will empower students to make informed decisions, leading to improved public health outcomes. In essence, HB 558 lays the groundwork for a more informed, healthy, and resilient generation.

I urge you to support this pivotal piece of legislation, recognizing its potential to positively impact our children's lives and the broader health landscape of our state.

Thank you for considering my perspective on this vital issue.

Thank you for Supporting the Comprehensive Education of Maryland Youth
